We made it to Christmas break!!
Today in class we did a very short scripture chase and the missionaries stopped in and joined us. bro Wiemer brought in some tasty breakfast - thanks much!
We had a white elephant gift exchange - it was very interesting.
Thanks to all who came today, and have a great break!
The reading for the vacation is to either catch up to Numbers, or to continue through Numbers (which is where we'll be after the break).
Happy break to all!

Silent lesson - December 13, 2007

Today we had a silent lesson. Thank you to the three students who showed up! For those who missed class today, feel free to print up and complete the following lesson for credit today.

Silent Lesson
Good Morning! Welcome to a silent lesson. Once a year I do a silent lesson to help you better feel the Spirit during your reading and studying of the scriptures.
Today's lesson will also count as your 10 minutes of reading for the day. Write your answers to the questions below. During this lesson you are not allowed to talk, or pass notes to anyone in this class. If you need help, raise your hand but don't talk. (If anyone needs help, they go outside the classroom)
Let's begin.......
SILENT DEVOTIONAL
1. Silently read ALL 5 VERSES of hymn #214. As you read, think about what you are reading.
2. Offer a silent prayer to yourself to invite the Spirit.
3. Read Psalms 24:3-4 to yourself 3 times
SILENT LESSON
1. You have been reading about much of the law of sacrifice that the children of Israel followed. What have you learned.
2. The last 9 chapters in Leviticus ends with important counsel for us to follow. Read Lev. 19:2 and write what that counsel is.
3. Read Lev. 19:3-12 and find out what counsel these verses sound like that is found in Exodus 20
4. List all the commandments you can find in Lev 19:3-12 and the verses they are mentioned in. (There are 6 of the 10 mentioned - you may need to look in Exocus 20 for help)
5. Why would these commandments come AFTER the counsel in verse 2 that we are all supposed to be holy, like the Lord?
6. Do you think it's possible to be "holy" if you don't follow those specific commandments? Why or why not?
7. The commandments in verses 3-12 are more specific that those found in Exodus 20. For example, the commandment isn't just not to steal, such as robbing a man or burglarizing a home. What's another way someone can steal? (See verse 13)
8. The commandment in Exodus 20 is to honor one's parents, but here for the Lord used the word "fear" (vs.3), which means a deep respect, reverence and awe. Who else are we to "fear"? In other words, we should have the same feelings for our parents as we have for whom? What should you do if you don t?
9. The commandment in Exodus 20 says not to bear false witness, but what does Lev 19:16 say about it? Make sure you read the footnotes!
10. In Lev. 19:18 we find the whole purpose for these laws and commandments. What is it?
11. During His earthly ministry, the Savior was asked by a scribe which of all the commandments was the greatest. Read Matthew 22:37 to find out His reply.
12. What then, did the Savior say in Matt 22:39 was the next greatest commandment?
13. To put it another way, these 2 principles are the foundation for all the writings of the Old Testament. All principles and commandments stem either from the need to love God or to love our neighbor. Do you believe this to be true? Why or why not?
14. Both of these commandments are mentioned in the Old Testament, but not at the same time. The first is found in Deuteronomy 6:5, the second is in Lev 19. What verse is it found in?
15. What type of a sacrifice is it to follow the commandments mentioned in Leviticus 19?
16. If we truly followed the commandment in Matt 22:40 and Lev 19:18, would the others be easy to follow? Why?
End with a silent closing prayer
Turn in your answers with your name on the paper and you may either silently sit until the end of class, or you may silently leave. Please be reverent to the other classes. Have an awesome day!

Is it Kosher? December 11, 2007

Today we finished the video we began yesterday which dealt with the sacrifices required by the Law of Moses and the sacrifices we are required to make, as we repent and come worthily to the sacrament table.
We discussed the importance of the priesthood bearers being worthy as they bless and pass the sacrament, as well as the meaning of the blood which Moses put on the priest's right ear, finger, and toe. As we went into Chapter 9, we looked at verses 23 and 24. We then wondered what it meant when it said that the 'glory of the Lord appeared unto all of the people.' We took some time to really look at this and checked all of the cross references, and finally spent some time using the bible dictionary to figure out what is meant by this phrase. The students marked Leviticus 9:6 which contains a principle and a promise. If we do the things which the Lord asks and commands us to do, we too can be blessed similarly - as were the Saints when the Kirtland and Nauvoo temples were built, as was Lehi and the brother of Jared - however, these things only come after the trial of the faith. We do first, then we see.
I hadn't planned on specifically going this direction today - and verse 6 hadn't really stood out to me in my preparation - but it sort of took on its own direction today.
We went back and covered chapter 10 of Leviticus. At the beginning of class, I had asked what would happen if a priest was unworthy to bless the sacrament and did it anyways.. we discussed it for a moment, and a student quietly mumbled that they would be struck by lightening. As we read about Nadab and Abihu, we saw what the Lord DID when the priesthood ordinances were altered by men - we then talked about the exactness which the Lord demands regarding the administration of his ordinances - and the importance of even the sacramental prayers being offered correctly.
Finally, we wrapped up class discovering which foods were or weren't kosher.
We had a table laid with grasshoppers, worms, camels, fish, bunnies, beef, shrimp, chicken, and bacon. The students had to figure out which foods were kosher and could be eaten.
We discussed that these dietary laws served two purposes. First, it is likely that due to the lack of refrigeration etc, port and shellfish products would have had the tendency (as they do today) to spoil and cause sickness and disease. Secondly, however, and more importantly, EVERYONE needs to eat, and people RARELY forget to eat. In working to get Egypt out of the Israelites, by giving laws which dealt with their food (which they would not likely forget to eat), they could be reminded of the Lord and of their reliance upon him. Finally, it also helped keep them separate from their neighboring Canaanites.
Todays reading assignment is Leviticus 12-18.

December 10, 2007

Today in class we began the book of Leviticus. As we examine chapters 1-7, we can see that these chapters cover the instructions for the administration of the Sacrifices. We discussed how you can't make a cake without a recipe, and the chapters of Leviticus give specific instructions regarding how to make sacrifices. Everything is spelled out including - what type of animal for which sacrifice, how the animal is to be placed on the altar (even the sequence)and where and how the blood is to be sprinkled, or where it is to be placed. All of these minute details are covered, as the Lord is a Lord of Order. He wants our sacrifices to be done correctly.
We focused on the first 9 verses of chapter 1, and wrote our recipe, or instructions for a proper burnt offering on the board, coming up with 10 necessary elements. We then had some volunteers who brought their animal (iced cookie) to the front of the class, and step by step they made an offering.
We then took the time to discuss how each element in the sacrifice is a type or shadow of Jesus Christ, and what each might represent.
Finally, we read a quote by Elder Maxwell about the sacrifice not really being about the animal, but it being about our willingness to bring the animal within us and lay it on the altar.
We finished class by watching the first section of a movie where a man goes back in time and shows himself (a teenager) how the sacrifice symbolized Jesus Christ, and how today, the sacrament does the same thing for us. We didn't quite finish the show since we had to end class early so the students could get to school on time, but we will finish the last 3 minutes of the movie and wrap up discussion tomorrow morning as we begin class.
Our scripture mastery for this week is Job 19:25-26.
The reading for tonight is Leviticus 8-11.

December 7, 2007

Today the students passed off 1 Samuel 16:7. We then played a scripture mastery game which involved basketballs, dice and a chalk board - working on reinforcing the scripture mastery verses which we've already mastered.
Thanks to all who showed up today.
Next week we will focus on the entire book of Leviticus.

December 6, 2007

Today we had the chance to review some of the Exodus story - focusing on the occasions during which Moses spoke with the Lord at the mountain. As we began class, the students answered the following questions in their journals - What do I want to get out of Seminary today? We discussed whether or not it is possible for me to meet each one of their needs each day in seminary. Some students said they talk to their parents about most of their problems, but the students all concurred that they don't generally talk with their parents about things they are praying about and praying for. Based on this we discussed how a teacher can't possibly meet each students needs. We discussed however, that Heavenly Father knows what each of our personal needs are, and through the Holy Ghost, we can have our prayers answered, and our personal needs can be fulfilled if we really listen to the Holy Ghost while in Seminary, or Church, or as we read etc.
Based on this, we then did a role play. 2 students volunteered to be our missionaries, and stepped outside the room to knock on the door. I answered the door, and they asked to share a message. They did a great job sharing their message, but I had a couple of questions (as an investigator). Based on Exodus 33:20, and John 1:18, no man can see God and live - that's what my pastor told me, and I just don't understand how Joseph Smith could see God and live, since God doesn't change, and that's what the scriptures say.
The students tried their best to come up with some answers... I then asked the students to spend some time looking in their topical guide under Jesus Christ, appearances of, ante and post mortal. As they did, I asked them to write down in their journals anything that impressed them, as well as any people who they found references to having seen Heavenly Father.
We got back into our role play with some new volunteers and started up where we'd stopped. The students could name several people who had seen the Lord, but we still struggled to find a good answer. Finally, we looked at the JST, and found that only a righteous person can see the Lord still live. We discussed how this really changes our understanding of the aforementioned scriptures, and really opens up our understandings. We ran out of time, but I had planned to ask the students to then record in their journals what they really DID get out of seminary this morning.
Tomorrow we will be doing a scripture chase - I recently found some really fun new ideas for them - I'm excited to try them out!
We will be covering Leviticus 1-7 on Monday during seminary, and we will finish the entire book of Leviticus next week. From here on out (for several weeks at least) we will be FLYING through the upcoming books - doing a minimum of a book a week, so the daily reading and keeping up is pretty important.

Happy Chanukkah! December 5, 2007

Today we celebrated Chanukkah. As yesterday we discussed the worship of idols, and as today celebrates certain points in Jewish history, we took some time to discuss this history. We discussed how Antiochus entered the temple and sacrificed swine, and erected an statue of Zeus and forced them to sacrifice and worship their idols. We discussed how the Maccabees led a rebel group, and finally as they went to re-dedicate the temple, they couldn't find enough oil for the candles - (menorahs). They decided to go on with the dedication anyways, and miraculously, the oil burned for 8 days - hence the 8 candles in the menorah.
As a class we made the traditional Latkes - potato pancakes. Since Chanukkah is generally a day of games and fun as the celebration, we used today for our auction. While the latkes cooked, the students used the gerahs which they've been earing for attendance throughout the year so far and purchased and competed for the items which interested them.
Tomorrow we will focus on Exodus 33-40, finishing the book of Exodus.

Who's on the Lord's Side? - December 4, 2007

Today we focused on Exodus chapter 32. We looked at what the Lord has said about Idolatry in DC 1:16, and then we read some scriptures in Deuteronomy regarding why the Lord commanded the Israelites to slay all of the inhabitants of the cities they came to - and saw that it was always due to idolatry. Going back into Exodus 34 and 32, we read the story of the golden calf, and we discussed Christs' relationship to the church as the Bridegroom. Within this context, we looked at Ex. 34 and read some verses about Israel going 'a whoring' after these other Gods.
We read some excerpts from a talk by Spencer W. Kimball regarding following other Gods, and discussed it in our lives. Two things I really liked from this talk were 1. He pointed out that most of the reasons people turn to other gods is due to the effort of the exercise of faith required. Many people don't have the patience or the faith, and so they turn to carnal false gods instead. The second thing that really impressed me was his discussion of wealth and the gods we pursue. He talked about a young man giving up going on a mission because he really loved his car. In the end, the car is just a composite of steel and rubber, which gave maybe some momentary satisfaction, but only the allusion of going somewhere. Whereas on a mission, he would have been exercising the blessings and promises given through the oath and covenant of the priesthood - which include the power to create worlds, move seas and mountains and more importantly - ALL that the Father hath. Pretty amazing to think that we are so short sighted and focus so much on the here and now and don't have the patience to exercise our faith so that we can receive the things to come.
We used some game show methods within this lesson - thanks to all who showed up and participated.
The assigned reading is Exodus 33 - 40.
Tomorrow we will finish up some final discussion of todays lesson as well as celebrate Hanukkah with some latkes and discuss the historical importance of this holiday to the Jewish people. We will also hold our first gerah auction tomorrow.

What are you wearing?? December 3, 2007

Today we focused on Exodus 28, 29 and 31. We really spent most of our focus discussing appropriate clothing. In these chapters we read about the clothing which the Lord asked Aaron and the priests to wear. It was VERY SPECIFIC and very detailed. Every minute part seemed to be exact and addressed. We looked at some pictures and discussed what a person says by the way they dress. We discussed the counsel which the Lord has given us today - especially the youth about how to dress. We read from the Strength of Youth pamphlet the clothing guidelines and discussed why certain students wouldn't wear their soccer clothing, dance clothing or wrestling outfits to church or to a formal dinner.

Finally, we divided the class up into boys and girls, and had a panel discussion.

The guys asked girls questions about how long they take to get ready, how many outfits they go through trying to find the right one etc. The girls discussed what they like regarding boys' modesty.

The girls asked boys questions about how boys' thoughts are influenced by modest or immodest dress. The boys talked about their preferences that girls would be modest - because it helps them to better honor their priesthood and keep their thoughts clean.

It was a great discussion, and I think that both groups were surprised at some of the responses they got from the other group.

We will be focusing on Exodus 32 tomorrow, and the scripture mastery for this week is 1 Samuel 16:7.

Tabernacle in the Wilderness...November 30, 2007

Today we focused on the tabernacle in the wilderness - using Exodus 25-31 as a guide. We had a tabernacle (tent) already set up in the room when we arrived. We discussed the importance of temples - what we use them for, what we do in them. We also discussed how homes are temples - however we talked about how anyone can walk into your home, whereas there are certain requirements required to enter the Lord's house. Additionally, sometimes there are raised voices etc in homes whereas these things do not happen in the temple - so there definitely are some differences.
Each student picked a partner, and they were assigned to be "Tabernacle square missionaries". Their jobs were to give the group a tour of the outer court, and explain what the altar, and laver were, and what they were used for. Within the tent we found an altar with shewbread and wine, and a menorah with oil candles, and an altar for incense. These items were all located within the "Holy Place". Finally, we crossed into the Holy of Holies where we saw the ark of the covenant (with our student's hand crafted foil cherubims - thanks they were great!) and the mercy seat.
Finally, we discussed how these three places have a distinct symbolism of the plan of salvation and the Celestial, Terrestial, and Telestial glories.

All of the students passed off their scripture mastery today as well - great job!

You are sentenced to be stoned to DEATH!! Nov. 29, 2007

Today we focused on Exodus 21-24 which contains some of the law of Moses. As we started class, we looked at Exodus 23:2 which talks about not following evil. We discussed peer pressure and how one withstands it. We had a class tug of war - one side being the world, the other being not of the world. The world won the tug of war. We then went outside (yes, very cold for those who came in their shorts). A student tied our rope around the tree which was representative of the Savior. We then all tugged and saw that no matter how hard the world pulls, the Savior stands strong, and he will support us.
As we went back into the class, we sat down and a student was volunteered to be our bailiff. She swore everyone in and handed out parts and we had a mock court. The students played the parts of witnesses, attorneys, defendants etc. Cases for picking up sticks - ie working on Sunday and stealing someone's cow were presented and our students deliberated and chose the sentences. Afterwards, we looked up in the scriptures to see what the penalties would be under the law of Moses - which generally involved being stoned to death - starting with the witnesses throwing the first stone.

Tomorrow we will be watching a movie and focusing on the Tabernacle in the wilderness.

What goes on your Sundae? November 28, 2007

Today we started off our discussion as we looked at the newspaper clippings which we collected yesterday and discussed how the articles supported or didn't support the 10 commandments. We talked extensively about the worship of false gods - like money, clothes, fashion, barbies, cars, school, music etc etc. We had a long discussion as well about taking the name of the Lord in vain as well as using other cuss words. I learned that 'snap' is a popular substitute for cuss words - I learn something new every day.
As we talked about keeping the Sabbath day holy, we made a sundae. A student volunteered to let me make her a sundae. We started with mint chocolate chip ice cream. We added chocolate and caramel sauce, and then some nuts and marshmallows and finally some whipping cream. IT LOOKED DELICIOUS. But, I didn't think it was quite finished yet, I'd brought some other things that I thought might also be appropriate on a sundae. Because I really like pickles (not really), we put some relish on it, some mayo, some ketchup, some spinach, and a lot of mustard. After we did this, the student wasn't quite as interested in having her sundae. She did take a bite though - (thanks - it WAS gross). Finally we talked about how some things really do go on sundaes, and some don't, just as some things are appropriate for Sundays, while others aren't. Finally we discussed some things that are and aren't appropriate, and discussed how using the guideline "does this thing/activity bring me closer to the Lord?" can be a great measuring stick to help us decide which things are Sunday appropriate or not.
Thanks to everyone for showing up today!

November 27, 2007

It was nice to get back into the routine of things again and start back up with seminary after taking last week off.
Today in class the students graded themselves for last trimester. We took a verbal 10 question true and false quiz about the 10 commandments and discussed it, and then we distributed the newspapers.
Each student picked a partner, and then the were assigned one of the ten commandments (or two as a group). They then spent time going through our local newspaper looking for examples of people who were or were not keeping their specific commandment.
They then cut them out, pasted them on a sheet, and we will discuss their decisions and some of the implications and the applicability tomorrow.
New reading assignment, scripture mastery and attendance logs were also distributed today. The students will use these as they grade themselves at the end of the term.
Our weekly scripture mastery is Joshua 24:15

November 16, 2007

On the 16th, we worked on our scripture mastery, and I don't remember what all else. We had a fairly low attendance rate for both the 15, and 16th - I was pretty surprised.
Anyways - We did a girls vs. boys scripture chase, and it was neck and neck, even though we only had 2 girls - great job!
Friday night we had a class party....unfortunately, only half of the class ended up coming, but we had a great time. We had pizza, smoking Sprim to drink, and lots of candy and homemade root beer which the students brought. We watched our home movie productions of some of the stories which we've been studying in the Old Testament, and finally watched an Indiana Jones movie...which interestingly followed some of the things we've been studying.
Thanks to all who came!

November 16, 2007

Once again, thanks to all who made the effort to come to class today. We've been having smaller numbers - possibly due to finals??
Today we worked on passing off our scripture mastery of Joshua 1:8. After all of the students passed it off, we had a scripture chase - girls against boys. We only had two girls, but they did a great job in holding their own. It was a very close race - great job!
Next week we will only hold class on Monday. The students have all been assigned one of the ten commandments, and they will each teach a 2-3 minute lesson on their particular commandment.
Class will resume on November 27th in the new trimester.

Due to our low attendance numbers yesterday and today, I wanted to make sure everyone knew about the class party tonight at my house at 6:30pm. We will watch our class videos we've been working on, have pizza etc and play some games - and possibly watch a show. I hope everyone can make it.
Please call for directions if you need them.
Good luck on finals!

November 15, 2007

Today was one of those really weird days.
One student showed up this morning. We chatted for several minutes while we waited for the other students. Finally, two others showed up. We discussed the importance of temple work and what it means to each of us. Finally, we decided to go an get some donuts (we ran into another student in the parking lot on our way out). We got donuts, and finished up class. On Monday the students have each been assigned a specific commandment. Thy are responsible to put together a 3 minute blurb about their assignment.
Thanks to all who participated!

November 14, 2007

Today we reviewed the issues of the Israelites' murmuring - it's not a sin to be thirsty, but it is to murmur against and criticize our leaders. We chronicled the departure from Egypt (the world) through the red sea (baptism) following the cloud and pillar of fire (Holy Ghost), journey through the wilderness (journey through life to God), Mt. Sinai (the temple) and finally to the promised land (eternal life/celestial kingdom).
We looked at Chapter 17 and read the story in Deuteronomy 25 which tells us why the Israelites entered into battle with the Amalakites. One of our students volunteered to be Moses and lifted her arms for us for quite a while - finally we had two other volunteers come up and help hold up their hands. Interestingly, they too got tired of holding up the hands. We discussed holding up and supporting our leaders as they serve. We ended the day in Chapter 18 discussing Jethro and his advice to Moses as he told him that what he was doing was not good - in carrying the whole load by himself. Really - why should he have to hear with and deal with petty complaints like - "his camel licked my dog?" We recognized that the church is set up and has a specific order - a line of direction so that our prophet and our leaders can really lead us instead of worrying about dog licking camels... :)
Tomorrow we will cover chapter 19.
The students have all been assigned an assignment to teach one of the ten commandments. On Monday each will take approx 3-4 minutes to teach us about their assigned commandment. We will not hold class on Tuesday November 20th.

Tuesday, November 13, 2007

November 13, 2007

Today we discussed the end of Chapter 15, and chapter 16 as we covered the Israelite's journey into the wilderness. We saw that even though it was barely a month since they had left Egypt, they had already forgotten their miraculous deliverance. We had some manna and some worms and discussed how they received their manna each morning and how much each person received. We then read in John 6:35 as Christ proclaims that He is the bread of life, and how the manna which the Israelites received was symbolic of Jesus Christ, and the necessity to have Him in our lives.
The Bishop attended class with us today and as we discussed the murmuring which we saw, he commented on some of the impacts of murmuring, and what he sees and experiences as he deals with members of the church. Thanks to the Bishop for sharing the 'but monkey' with us as well. We read an excellent quote from David O. McKay which classified the members of the church into two categories - the builders or the murmurers. We thought about which we would be classified as and thought about which we would like to be.
Tomorrow we will discuss the battle with the Amalakites and Jethro's advice to Moses as we discuss upholding each other in Chapters 17 - 19.

Monday, November 12, 2007

November 12, 2007

Today we covered chapters 13-15 in Exodus. We discussed the cycle of Faith and Obedience which leads to increased faith as we chronicled the Israelites' departure into the wilderness. We spent time looking at the wavering faith of these people, and then at Moses' response to their concerns as he told them to "Fear not, stand still, watch, and see that the Lord would indeed save them" and then that they crossed through the sea on dry ground. We finished the day discussing some of the merits found in chapter 15, which is a song they sang after crossing the Red Sea. The students found their favorite hymns and shared why they are important to them or special experiences that they've had with a hymn.
Tomorrow we will be covering the second half of chapter 15, and chapters 16-17. We will begin discussing and focus on the murmuring (which actually continues through Numbers). Our scripture mastery for this week is Joshua 1:8 - Meditate.

Sunday, November 11, 2007

November 8-9, 2007

Well, my computer was out of commission for a couple of days, so I didn't get a chance to update what we did last week until several days later.
On Thursday November 8, we studied the Passover. We discussed the symbolism which we see in our lives as Christ saves and redeems us just as he did the Israelites. To further emphasize, we discussed the importance of cleaning all of the leaven (sin or corruption) from our houses. We cleaned our classroom, and then we had a 'passover meal'. We used grape juice and bitter herbs and salt water (to symbolize the bitterness of bondage and the salty tears they shed)as well as Matzah, lamb meat, eggs and potatoes. We had our oldest student lead us in the dinner and some of the explanations as our youngest student take the role of the youngest in the family who asks the questions "why?".

On Friday the 9th, we worked on passing off Deuteronomy 7 (good job!) and then we made a movie depicting the plagues of Egypt as a musical. We saw the plague of blood for water, then the locusts (complete with background dancers)and finally, the dead cows and the live Israelite cows - kick line and all!

This next week we will be working on Exodus 14-20 and memorizing Joshua 1:8.

Wednesday, November 7, 2007

November 7, 2007

Here are the options - Life is a musical, Drama King/Queen, Tell the story with Pickles, Play dough story, Draw the story, or Your choice. Today we studied the 10 plagues which the Egyptians suffered due to Pharaoh's hard heart. The students threw a dice to find out which plague they would report on, and then threw the BIG dice which told them how they would be telling about their plague (as in the above options). We had some WONDERFUL musical vignettes, some great play dough stories - (check out the lice on that one, and headless cows), and even some pickle cows, and buzzing flies etc. It was a pretty fun day - thanks to the students for their willing participation and creativity :)
Tomorrow we will be studying the passover, and on Friday, we have a script and we will do a movie with a script for this section of Moses' life.

Tuesday, November 6, 2007

November 6, 2007

Today we finished up some of our discussion which we didn't get to yesterday. We covered Exodus 3-7 today. The students identified Moses' concerns with his calling, and then searched for the Lord's responses to his concerns. We discussed callings which we may receive in our lives (or struggles we may have) and how the Lord can make all things happen if we trust in HIM instead of doubting ourselves.
Afterwards, we switched gears and focused on signs, and more importantly emphasized Moses' encounter with Pharaoh and the Magicians. The magicians were able to completely duplicate the signs which the Lord had given to Moses to show unto Pharaoh. We discussed the power which Satan DOES have, and his intent and desire to deceive us. We talked about how it feels to feel the Holy Ghost, and discussed the peace which the Holy Ghost can give us. Although Satan can duplicate most things, he CANNOT duplicate the peace which we receive from the Holy Ghost as he testifies to us regarding the truth.
Tomorrow we will be going over Exodus 7-11 and we will be playing a very interactive game regarding the plagues. Please brush up on these chapters for the optimal advantage!

Monday, November 5, 2007

November 5, 2007

This morning we talked about the students' trip to the temple this weekend. We discussed their feelings while they were in the temple, and we began a spiritual journal. Each of the student has a journal in which they can write each week to write down their spiritual experiences and impressions, or things that are important to them, which strengthen their testimonies. We discussed Moses' trip into the mountain, and discussed the appearance of the Lord to him, and was asked to remove his shoes. We talked about the reverence which we have when we go into these places, and discussed how our homes, and churches can also be temples when they are where we go to receive spiritual instruction.
Each student was asked (and most committed) to read Exodus 3-4 this evening. As they read, the students need to look for specific doubts or questions which Moses had regarding his calling. Then the students are asked to look for the specific answers which the Lord then gave Moses regarding his call in these two chapters.
Tomorrow, we will briefly discuss this and move onto 5-6.

Sunday, November 4, 2007

November 2, 2007

On Friday we passed off our scripture mastery and then proceeded to do some chariot races. The students lined up on one side of the gymn, and with one team member sitting on a cardboard box lid, dragged them across the gymn to look up the scripture mastery scripture and return to the other side of the room.
It sounds like there are some plans in motion for moving this outside into the snow with sleds come snow season - or some ducktape adaptations have been mentioned for future use as well!
This next week we will be digging into Exodus...

Happy Halloween

Thanks to the 5 survivors who made it to class today. Today we discussed a quote by Elder Rector (Jr.) regarding the things we do, and doing what we do because we love the Lord. The students worked together today on a crossword puzzle which had to do with Moses' life as we are beginning Exodus and found some interesting information. We discussed some of the reasons why Israel was in Egypt for so long, and some of the blessings that came to them as a people during this long period of time - ie. peace, unity, and multiplication, as well as adversity to help them grow.
Thanks for making it today~!
Tomorrow will be a continuation of todays lesson of Exodus 1-2 and we will be discussing the heroic acts of some of the women in these chapters.

October 30, 2007

Today we finished up our discussion of the tribe of Ephraim and some of the blessings which pertain to it. We also covered Joseph's final days in Genesis 50 and his death, specifically touching on his relationship with his brothers, and the pattern for forgiveness which we see in this final chapter. We spent some time studying some of Joseph's prophecies concerning Moses' time, as well as our days as found in the JST of Genesis 50.
Finally, as our final overview, we played Genesis Jeopardy and reviewed several of the stories which we've studied throughout the past couple of months.
Tomorrow we begin our Exodus... :)
The reading assignment is Exodus 1-2.

October 26 - 29, 2007

Last Wednesday, my alarms did not go off, and I ended up being late to class. Most of the students showed up however, and we spent the remainder of our class time 'bonding'.
On Thursday and Friday (25-26) we continued our discussion of Joseph as we followed his story through Genesis 37-45 - we divided the class into several groups and did some newscasts regarding some of the situations found in these chapters. The Elders joined our class on Friday, and we finished up class with too little time to properly finish our full Joseph story, so the class had a scripture chase - vs. the elders, and thoroughly stomped on them. Some may say that it wasn't fair since the elders didn't know the actions or rhymes as well as the students, but the students stomped on them nevertheless.
Today in class (29) the students ate breakfast while we discussed what it means to be a member of the tribe of Ephraim. We discussed the idea and customs related to birth order and more importantly the importance of "Birthrights". Additionally, we discussed the importance of patriarchal blessings, and what they mean, as well as how we can obtain the blessings which are promised therein. One final thought was the idea of the "double portion" (regarding the birthright). We discussed how the gospel was restored and saints are being gathered through the tribe of Ephraim - we discussed the blessings we have - and as such, the inherent responsibilities which we face due to our membership in the tribe of Ephraim.
Thanks to the class for the great discussion.

October 23, 2007

Today we focused on Genesis 39, 40 and 41.
We divided our class into three groups and each group put together a newscast based on their specific scriptures/topic they had been assigned.
Our first group compared Judah and Joseph's reactions when they were confronted with immoral situations. This group also gave us several suggestions which can be beneficial in keeping morally clean.
Our second group focused on the dreams which the Pharaoh had - and the interpretations and meanings. Additionally, they found scriptures which discussed dreams and how one can tell that they are from Heavenly Father.
Our final group focused on preparedness. They examined Joseph's experiences in preparing his country for the famine. This group reported on the necessity of preparing ourselves both temporally and spiritually.
The reading assignment for today is Genesis 42-45.

October 22, 2007

Last week we had several members of our class who were sick and therefore absent on various days - it is good to have (most) everybody back and in good health! Today we focussed on Genesis 37-41, going over the story of Joseph. Todays focus was on the adversity that Joseph experienced throughout his life. We examined several scriptures and the students read through excerpts and then shared what they had understood with the class and discussed whether or not they saw it as a positive or a negative in Joseph's life. Finally, we discussed Joseph's attitude in the adversity, and how all of the adverse things which happened in his life turned into positives as it put him in the right place at the right time (eventually). Even if life is tough - Heavenly Father loves us and there is a purpose - even if we don't understand it now. I appreciate the student's willingness to participate today.
Tonight's reading assignment is Genesis 40-41.

October 18th & 19th

Well - It looks like I missed yesterday as well. Here's what we did.
We've been working on memorizing the 10 commandments - we passed them off today, and also learned a new way to remember them as well from the missionaries.
Yesterday we congratulated those who play on the soccer team on their win - they are going to STATE playoffs!! They'll find out on Sunday who they will be playing and when. We headed out into the cold hallway where we pulled up the sofas and all got cozy. We talked about some of the weird dreams we've had, and then talked about favoritism in families. Although we ran out of time - we had a couple of students begin to read Genesis 37, and explain what they had understood in the verses which they read. We read about Joseph and the coat of many colors and discussed the significance of his coat and also of the birthright going to him instead of some of the older brothers who may have thought that they had a right to it. We ended in talking about the likelihood that Joseph's attitudes and character which we see in his later life were formed while he was still in his youth - about these students' ages.
Today - all of the students passed off their scripture mastery of Exodus 20 - the ten commandments as mentioned. We then pulled out the dress up and material boxes, and decided which parts we wanted to play. We made our first seminary class movie of Joseph and the coat of many colors.
We will watch this video (and future ones) at our seminary class parties. We will be having a class party within the next 2 weeks. Our invite a friend to seminary day will be on October 29th. **All dates subject to future changes**
The reading assignment for this weekend is Genesis 37-39

October 16 & 17

I missed getting the blog in yesterday - yesterday we spent some time working on our scripture mastery for the ten commandments - Exodus 20 - ten is plenty. Amazingly, within about 5 minutes all of the students were able to remember all 10 of them, and even recite them back and explain them all today. It is a fun learning system, and has to do with figuring out how to connect the number 4 to keeping the Sabbath Day holey (the sp is on purpose) - it's kind of out there, but fun and seems to work! Later, we spent time in Genesis 29 as we discussed Jacob and his marriage with Leah and Rachel, and all of the kids they had between them.
This morning, we are grateful for the student who stopped to get pickles for the class on his way in. Pickles at 6:00 am does seem a bit out there, but we played pickled scripture lightening. We studied Genesis 31 - 34 and will finish up tomorrow with 35 - 37. Basically, if the game gets turned over (which it does VERY often), you earn a quarter of a pickle bite. Once you get four, your team has to take a bite.
The reading assignment for tonight is Genesis 34-37, and you can skip 36 which is mainly genealogy.
Tomorrow we will have a couch discussion, and Friday we will be making a seminary home video. If students have any beards, wigs, robes, staffs or cool props - please bring them in! We'll then plan a party to watch it!

October 15, 2007

Due to my being called to Jury Duty, our class was much shorter than usual. Additionally, as we are getting a chalkboard on the wall, I had to flip the classroom. We put together a new seating arrangement, and the students voted on district leaders. We spent some time with each of them looking for a spiritual thought that they could share throughout the week. Finally, we began to discuss Jacob's journey to the house of Laban. We began to discuss Jacob's dream of the ladder and it's significance for each of us. We will be comparing these blessings with those found in D&C 109. The reading assignment for today is Genesis 31-33, and a personal letter which I gave each of the students.

October 4, 2007

Well - I'm not quite sure what we should attribute the poor attendance to today, but we only had three students show up! As a result, we had a rousing opening hymn and prayer, a spiritual thought and some scripture mastery, and then since no one else had shown up, we took off. Unfortunately, Honey Bun did not appear to be open, so we headed for Columbine (hoping to miss the flies - but saw one). We found some chocolate milk and donuts and hung out for a minute before we headed back. If was a pretty fun and spontaneous morning - sorry to have missed all of the rest of you!
For those who are out of town, the lessons for next week will be Genesis 21-27 - please keep up with us by doing the assignments which are in the student study guide for these chapters.
Finally, I believe that we will be challenging the missionaries to a scripture chase re-match next Friday, October 12! Please PREPARE!!
By the way - PLEASE WATCH CONFERENCE!! THERE WILL BE A TEST!!

October 3, 2007

Today in Seminary we discussed some of the wickednesses that our students see at school on a daily basis, and listed them on the board. I, as always learned many new things about the challenges today's youth face, and appreciate the student's willingness to talk about them. As we studied Genesis 17-18, we discussed the question that is posed in these chapters "Is anything too hard for the Lord?". What a great question - so many times we doubt the Lord and His greatness and His mercy, but we see over and over again that if we will but just trust in Him, things will work out according to His plan - and the right way for our benefit. What a great lesson. Finally, we went over the story of Sodom and Gommorah, as we discussed what how we would react if 3 angels (or even the stake presidency) showed up at our door. We discussed the number of the righteous who lived in this city, and Lot and his families' departure from the city. Finally we discussed how Lot's wife turned back and was destroyed as well. We all face times in our lives when we start on the path to righteousness, but for some reason or another choose to turn back - when we do so, we may lose many great blessings as evidenced by Lot's wife.
Thanks to all who showed up and for the discussion!
The reading assignment for tonight is Genesis 19-20, and we will be discussing Abraham's sacrifice tomorrow.

Tuesday, October 2, 2007

October 2, 2007

Today we had a small turnout, but covered Genesis 15-17. We talked about trials being turned into blessings, and keeping things in the Lord's time as we discussed the promises that the Lord made to Abraham him regarding his posterity. We also talked about our decisions, and how each decision we make sparks a reaction, and how important it is for us to really trust in the Lord. Thanks to all who came today and participated and showed up!

October 1, 2007

Well - I didn't get to the blog on Friday September 28 - and today's is a little late, but Friday the missionaries (who had been talking smack to the students all week long) forgot to set their alarm clock (we think they were really just scared!), and so they didn't show up for the great scripture chase challenge. We tried the squirt bottle scripture chase rendition, and thank you to the parents who sent in the homemade cinnamon rolls!! They were awesome!!
In regards to today - we have several members of our class vacationing - so I hope they are checking this. We went over Genesis 13-14 today. We spent quite a bit of time discussing which direction we pitch our own tents. Lot (Abraham's nephew) pitched his tent towards Sodom. I think one of the messages we learn here is that it really is important which direction we are facing and what and who we surround ourselves with - do we openly accept the wickedness of the world or turn our backs to it? Lot was taken captive (as we are by Satan when we follow his enticings), and finally, he was rescued and redeemed by Abraham his kinsman. We discussed some of the spiritual symbolisms found in this specific story, even relating to our own spiritual captivities and redemptions. We then spent much of the class discussing the priesthood. What it means to the young men, how it influences their lives and their actions - how it feels to hold the priesthood etc. We studied the wonderful JST Genesis 14:25-40 which gives some amazing insights into some of the promises given to those who hold the Melchezidek priesthood, and the powers of this priesthood.
The reading assignment for today and tomorrow is Genesis 15-16 as we will begin to discuss the Abrahamic Covenant, as well as the Abraham and Isaac story.

September 27, 2007

This morning we discussed our opening song music. All of the students committed to singing in the mornings - even if their neighbor might sound like a frog (we did have a couple of I'll tries - but good enough). Today we discussed the commitment to read our scriptures for 10 minutes each day BEFORE starting their homework. One student did it for the full past week, others valiantly tried but didn't make it the whole way through. In order to facilitate learning and discussion within the classroom and promote scripture study, we came up with a plan. As the students enter the classroom each day, they will find the lesson block written on the board, and instead of visiting while they wait for class to start, they will work on reading the lesson block scriptures. This will help prepare them to learn, and invite the spirit to personally teach them. Finally, after the devotional, we may take 5-10 minutes to allow the students to continue this reading. Afterwards, we will begin our discussion based on the reading materials. We'll start with this, and then amend as needed. The remainder of our discussion today was based on Abraham's genealogy and his trip from Ur into the land of Canaan, and finally Egypt. We discussed the cultural significances of Abraham's response to being questioned regarding his relationship with Sarai, and finally, we discussed how Abraham's name was changed, some of his promised blessings, and how we covenant to take Christ's name upon us each time we take the sacrament. Thanks for a great class!!

September 26, 2007

Today we touched on our relationships with our parents, and then turned to a debate regarding whether or not it is possible for a person to be righteous and strong when faced with the challenge of having unrighteous parents. Although both sides had some great points, we saw that truly - our ability to be righteous depends upon us. We then looked at Abraham and his experience with his father (who tried to have him sacrificed to false Gods), and his example. Finally, we touched on the Abrahamic Covenant, and some of the blessings of the tribe of Ephraim.

Frosting may not be the most effective building material!

Today we finished up our discussion on Noah, and began to discuss the tower of Babel, and finally Abraham, and the things which he most desired - looking at the things which we most desire in our lives as well. Additionally - we had our own leaning tower contest - between the girls and the guys...the girls started out strong, but were slowed down when gravity issues began to creep up. The boys got stronger as they started adding cookie weights to the sides of the tower to offset the lean. I believe that the boy's tower was the second to fall! See some of the fun photos of our class as they built their towers...(Editors note - I believe the building problems arose when people started to eat their towers)

September 24, 2007

Today we focused on the divergent paths of those who followed Adam and Eve and the gospel versus those who followed Cain and Satan. Those who followed Adam and Eve ended up in the city of Enoch or Zion, whereas the others finally became so wicked, that it was an act of mercy that they were taken in the Flood. We looked at this pattern, and then looked at scriptures that point us to the second coming of Jesus Christ - and noted the similarities of this previous dispensation, and our lives today. Our last focus was on our personal preparation. Would we be ready to meet Christ if He were to show up in 2 minutes, or would we have things that we would need to repent for etc?
Our reading assignment for tomorrow is Abraham 1-2, and Genesis 12.

September 21, 2007

Note: If you have not seen the Donald Duck rendition of Noah's ark from Fantasia 2000, you should - who knew Donald Duck was on the ark?? :) Today we all signed our class picture which we will hang in our room. For our scripture mastery, we played scringo...translated as scripture bingo. We have challenged our FT missionaries to a scripture chase next Friday - we'll see who will prevail! The reading assignment for the beginning of next week is Genesis 11, and Abraham 1.

September 20, 2007

Dating dilemmas. Today our class was a little bit smaller than usual, but we spent most of the class period in discussion. It was awesome to hear what is going on in the students' lives, and what they think about, and their own personal experiences. We talked a lot about dating, and also about marrying those of different faiths, and some of the problems which can arise from doing so. It was a pretty fun class today - thanks to all who made the effort to be there~and thanks for sharing!!

September 19, 2007

Today we had a rousing game of something which could be described as mad dash to the chairs. The winner's scores were undoubtedly in the billions, but we learned a lot about Noah. I issued a challenge to everyone - which I think all accepted. The challenge is to try an experiment for the next week. Yesterday as we talked about how class was going, we talked about all of the pressures the students have with school, sports and music. On top of that, they are asked to read their scriptures for 10 minutes each day. The students said that it is such a chore just to try to squeeze those few minutes in for the scriptures. The challenge which was issued/experiment is that for the next 7 days, the students read their scriptures for 10 minutes BEFORE they do the other things - like FIRST. I believe that they will find their capacity to do these other things increased, and that things will fall into place. After a week, we will discuss the results and see if there is any difference.
Finally - since we are talking about Noah - we went outside and tried to figure out the distance/area and dimensions of the ark. We figured 4 times the length of the back church parking lot... pretty huge. Some of the students just didn't think that it was possible that it would have held everything, but after seeing an approximation, it puts it into perspective a little better.
Tomorrow we will continue with Noah - and then begin to move on. By the way - Noah's other name is Gabriel (as in the one who announced Christ's birth to Mary), and he is second to Adam in the priesthood order...pretty interesting.

September 18, 2007

Today in class, we had a group discussion regarding seminary - the current policies and procedures etc. Several students spoke up and we talked about some of the things that they liked and or disliked.
We finished up the lesson discussing Enoch's experience as he saw God weep over the wickedness of the world.
We also discussed having a class party this Saturday evening.
We will continue in Moses 8 tomorrow as we discuss Noah. Students are invited to bring coats or jackets as part of our class tomorrow will be held outdoors.

September 17, 2007

Our stake had stake conference this weekend. We received a challenge from our stake Presidency to read JSH and the New Testament by March of 2008. Along with this challenge, we were asked to increase our stake numbers by 600 people. What an awesome task!! In class, we discussed this challenge we've been given as it is modern day direction from our Stake President, and to him from someone who has been set apart as a prophet today. We read the story of Enoch, and studied his before and after life. What an awesome example of someone who has the faith the completely trust in the Lord, and then is so immensely blessed for it. We all have challenges in life, how we meet those challenges though, is our test. We can be strong and rely on the Lord like Enoch, and become a tool in His hands to change and influence the lives of so many others! It is, however, up to us.

September 14, 2007

Today we celebrated the Jewish New Year Holiday - Rosh Hashana. As today is the feast of the Trumpets, we all took a turn trying to get some sound out of a shofar - which is Hebrew for ram's horn thingee. Surprisingly, almost all of the students were able to get some sound out of it. We passed off Moses 7:18, and had our dart throw session. We finished the class hour up with a very tight scripture chase game. Sitting on others' heads is officially against the rules by the way!
We ended class (for those who weren't full of donuts) with some traditional Jewish New Year's Honey Cake.

Thursday, September 13, 2007

September 13, 2007

This morning we began to work through Moses chapter 6. We watched a seminary movie about the first ordinances and principles of the gospel, which also discussed the symbolisms of blood, water, and spirit in regards to our lives - the physical and spiritual necessities. We discussed history - it's relevance in our lives, and how the scriptures give us spiritual history...we also discussed why the scriptures were written and how they are important in our lives. Several students shared meaningful experiences in which the scriptures have touched and helped their lives. Thanks to all for your participation and for making class so meaningful today! An especially large thank you to all of the students who made it today!

September 11 & 12th

We have been slowly working our way through Moses 4 and Moses 5 (in conjunction with the Genesis chapters which are mirrored within Moses). On the 11th, we discussed the war in heaven and Satan's war which he specifically wages against the saints of God and members of the church as well as the necessity of the Fall. Using candy, we illustrated the need for rules, for choices and options, and for a chance to make these choices. Satan's plan lacked all of these things. Today (12th) we focused on the sacrifices which we are asked and commanded to make - even when we don't understand them or know why, as well as finding principles and applications from Moses 5 which are applicable to ourselves.
The reading assignment is Moses 6-7 and Genesis 5.

Monday, September 10, 2007

September 10, 2007

Today after watching a video about the creation, we tested out the big bang (or drop) theory (it failed miserably). Afterwards, we tried our own hand at the creation - with a little play dough help, and then Trevor successfully earned treats for the whole class tomorrow.
Students are encouraged to read for 10 minutes each day - personal study - this is their daily homework. They are encouraged to follow the reading chart handed out in class last week for their personal reading.
The reading assignment for today is Genesis 3 and Moses 4.

Sunday, September 9, 2007

September 7, 2007

Today was our first real (almost) Friday, Scripture Mastery day. We used most of the class period as a work time so that the students could mark all of their scripture mastery verses in their scriptures. For any students who were not present - please take the time on your own to mark your scripture mastery verses in your scriptures at home. In the future, we will be doing activities on Fridays (not exclusively, but frequently) related to scripture mastery. We will also pass off the scriptures that we memorize during the week and work on our dart throwing skills.
We passed off Moses 1:39 - all of the students present were able to recite it from memory. As a result - we unveiled the Dog Bone Box. This box, is covered with rows of candy and dog bones. We hang the box, spin it, and the students get to try their hand at darts. They get one dart for each scripture they pass off. Whatever their dart gets (and sticks to) they get to keep - be it the dog bone, or the candy bar.
The reading assignment is Abraham 4-5. We will begin talking about the creation this next week, and will be using the Abraham account.
The scripture mastery we will memorize this week is Moses 7:18.
FYI--parents and students please remember that Monday classes will be held at 8:00 am instead of the regular 6:00 am!

Loyal to the Royal! September 6,2007

Today we focused on Moses 1. We watched a video that illustrated the potential a tiny seed has to become a giant sequoia. We, like that seed have the divine potential to become like Heavenly Father. We discussed the formula Satan used to tempt Moses, and the formula which Moses used to fight against Satan. We discussed how this can be applied to our lives, and the importance of spiritual armor each day in our lives. Finally, we discussed the importance of being loyal to the royal which is within each one of us as children of an eternal Heavenly Father. The reading assignment for our next class is Abraham 4-5. We will begin talking about the creation next week. Students are assigned to read 10 minutes in their scriptures (Old Testament)each day. Tomorrow we will bring out the dog bone box, and we will pass off Moses 1:39. Students are encouraged to memorize and pass off 25 scripture mastery verses throughout the year. This is our first one. Parents, please encourage and help your students with their memorization of these verses.
Next weeks scripture mastery is Moses 7:18

Wednesday, September 5, 2007

September 5, 2007

Today we talked about the plan of salvation - how it is like a tomato. You'll have to ask the students for further clarification on that one!
In addition to tomatoes and getting to know WHO WE ARE, we spent time discussing Abraham 1, and Abraham 3. The reading assignment for today is Moses 1. Students who arrive to class on time and participate will receive money which they can use for the quarterly auctions.

Tuesday, September 4, 2007

September 4, 2007

Today we were assigned into our districts, and had our first student led devotional. We studied the Plan of Salvation, working to make sure we got all of the parts into order. The assigned reading for tonight is Abraham 1. However, I made a mistake - it should have been Abraham 3. Tomorrow we will be covering Abraham 1-5, with the main focus on chapter 3. Chapter 3 of Abraham focuses on, and reinforces the plan of salvation and our own part within this plan.

Friday, August 31, 2007

Day three

Today our focus was on Scripture Mastery. We worked on hand and body actions which correspond with the scripture mastery verses, as well as learning the rhymes. Each year the students are asked to memorize 25 specific scriptures - the actions and rhymes help reinforce the memorization process along with the long term memory.
We had our first scripture chase, and thanks to the parent who brought in surprise donuts and juice!
Next week we will be organizing the class into districts and beginning student reading assignments as well as student led devotionals. Next week's scripture mastery will be Moses 1:39. We will pass this off on Friday, and then use the dog-bone box for the first time (sorry - the unveiling was postponed to next Friday as well).

Thursday, August 30, 2007

Day 2

Today we made class rules - it was decided that late offenders would have to do wall sits for every minute they come tardy...we'll see how this works out! The rules for me had to do with food and fun - so we'll see what I can come up with. Anyone out there have any allergies? Anything they absolutely hate? I guess that would be good to know beforehand right?

So - for any of you students logging in - here's an additional thought regarding rules that I forgot to bring up today. Auctions. We can set up a couple each year, (maybe 4?) and you earn money by participating in class and being on time, which you can then use for the auction. Any thoughts on that?

For any parents out there, or the Bond girls - today we focused on missing doctrines from the OT, and talked about the JST. We also talked about the Hebrew / Greek translation italicized words, the footnotes and the maps. I handed out a quiz for the students to complete at home. Tomorrow we will be playing jeopardy using the JST, Maps, TG, BD, and footnotes. We will also mark all of our scripture mastery verses and start working on that. I will bring the dog bone box tomorrow for the official unveiling.

I'd love to hear your thoughts and comments! M

First Day

Well - today was the first day of class. Several students showed up before I did - I was pretty surprised - but very pleased.
Hello to all of my students - please feel free to comment on anything we've talked about, post any questions etc.
I will be using this blog to communicate all of the weekly reading assignments and any homework. This way you can check and always know where we are. Additionally, I may assign post makeup assignments through your workbook if you need to do some make up.

I'd love to hear any of your feedback and or ideas and suggestions!
I will be updating the blog weekly - and it will be fun to see where we end up by the end of this class!
Good luck to all and see you in the morning!
M
